Activities and Attractions

There are so many things to see and do during your visit to the Northwoods.  Here are just a few to consider.

Canoeing

Ottawa National Forest
The almost one million acres of the Ottawa National Forest are located in the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The area is rich in wildlife viewing opportunities; topography in the northern portion is the most dramatic with breathtaking views of rolling hills dotted with lakes, rivers and spectacular waterfalls. For more information, go to the following link to the
USDA Forest Service.

The Paulding Light
A favorite nighttime destination is the Paulding Light. The "Ghost Light" as many call it, has defied explanation since it was first sighted many years ago.  To observe the phenomenon, one must drive north from Watersmeet on U.S. 45 for 4 miles toward the neighboring village of Paulding, and take Robbins Pond Road west for a short distance. The light appears to rise slowly out of the forest and then hovers low in the sky for varying intervals - ranging from a couple of minutes to over a quarter of an hour.  Explanations vary from fanciful to factual. Some say it's the spirit of a long dead mail carrier ambushed by Indians over a century ago; others insist it is the ghost of an engineer killed in a nearby railroad accident in years gone by. For more information, go to the following link to
The Paulding Light.

Porcupine Mountains
The Porcupine Mountains is a beautiful destination in the area. Just about an hour’s drive north from Watersmeet, the Porcupine Mountains rise abruptly from Lake Superior to form a 12 mile long escarpment which parallels the lakeshore for a distance of 1.5 miles. On the landward side of the escarpment is Lake of the Clouds, which is one of the spectacular views to be found from high peaks in the area. On a clear day, one may see more than 25 miles to the west. For more information, go to the following link for the
Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Sylvania Recreation Area
The Sylvania Wilderness and Sylvania Recreation Area, is located near Watersmeet, Michigan and is part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Combined with the adjacent Recreation Area, the 18,327 acre wilderness offers an outstanding experience for those who want to camp, fish, hike, canoe, or enjoy the solitude of a wilderness experience.  Few Wildernesses compare to Sylvania. Here you will find 34 named lakes - some with sandy beaches, others surrounded by record-size red and white pines. This large natural area with its old growth forest and pristine lakes provides habitat for a wide range of living things.  For more information, go to the following link for the
USDA Forest Service.
